National Insurance Crime Bureau Creates Katrina Flood Car Registry

To help prevent the undisclosed sale of flood cars to the public, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) will be placing a special team of people in the Gulf states heavily hit by Hurricane Katrina.  Their responsibility will be to identify and catalog cars that were injured creating what will be known as the Katrina Registry.  The announcement made in a NICB  press release (link no longer available) dated September 11, 2005 says the project is expected to take  six months to one year to complete.

The number of affected vehicles has not yet been released by FEMA, but industry sources expect as many as 100,000 entries into the registry.

Robert M. Bryant, NICB’s president and CEO was quoted in the press release saying, “…unscrupulous salvage operators and dealers often try to conceal the fact that vehicles have been damaged by a natural disaster”… “By creating the registry of damaged vehicles now, the potential for this type of fraud can be greatly reduced.”
