WHEELERSBURG, OH – BodyShop Business, a monthly magazine devoted to the auto collision repair trade from Babcox Publications, Inc., recently showcased an article written by Safe Collision Repairs founder, David Williams. The story was featured on the magazine’s August 2005 cover and was the lead story in that issue.
The article titled, “Build a Better Mousetrap, and the World Will Beat a Path to Your Door,” outlines strategies of to help honest, high-quality body shops survive and thrive in a market fixated on “fast and cheap” repairs. The story looks at what some shops are doing to retain success when many of the same types of businesses are failing all around them.
In discussing the article Williams had this to say: “The market has shifted. Not so long ago a body shop was known as a good or bad shop by the level of quality in the product it turned out. Today, a shop’s identity is based on maintaining relations with insurance companies who by and large partner with shops whose most significant promise to them is to be among the least expensive in a market."
“Craftsmanship and skill don’t matter much to insurers – at least not as much as price,” confesses Williams. “Moreover,” he adds, “…consumers are often afraid to voice an objection to shoddy work they receive for fear their insurance premiums will raise. As a result, when the attitudinal shift came along, some high quality shops got left behind. Once considered by their peers as innovative and successful, many of these shops now find they are struggling to survive against competitors who don’t have enough skills to carry their toolboxes,”
Williams, once a body shop owner himself survived after transitioning his business into a mobile automotive inspection business. The story of his own metamorphous is proof that shop owners don’t have to abandon their values to retain profitability.
